On July 22nd, Rheinische Post stated Wolverhampton Wanderers had already held talks with Borussia Mönchengladbach over a deal for Nico Elvedi. It was also said he’s open to making a switch to England.
Earlier this month, the same outlet reported the Premier League side’s refusal to meet the fee requested has made the negotiations tough.
The centre-back’s deal expires in 2024 and the German club have an option to extend it for a year. Earlier claims had said he’s keen to leave the Bundesliga side this summer.
It’s said Julen Loptegui’s side ‘want to sign’ the Switzerland international but a potential deal may have to wait a little longer because of the lack of progress made in this case. That doesn’t mean a deal cannot be carried out this summer.
Wolves would have received encouragement in their pursuit of the player after Gladbach sporting director Nils Schmadtke opened the door for his sale in the next few weeks.
“A lot has already been said about Nico Elvedi in the past two weeks. But there is still no decision, so we have to wait and see what happens to him,” he said, as quoted by Kicker.
“We continue to watch the market closely. If something comes up that will help us sportingly and is financially feasible, we would certainly not close our eyes to it.”
Elevdi’s exit shouldn’t be an issue for Gladbach as they have already signed Maximilian Wöber on loan from Leeds United.
