Angel Gomes will leave Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer and return to Olympique Marseille.
L’Equipe report that the 25-year-old midfielder will not be remaining at Molineux beyond the end of the season after joining on loan in the January transfer window.
Wolves exit
A report earlier this week stated that there was an ‘extremely slim chance’ that Wolves would be signing Angel Gomes on a permanent basis this summer.
L’Equipe now insist that is concrete. Gomes will be returning to Marseille when his loan deal comes to an end.
According to their information, Wolves’ relegation to the Championship, which was confirmed this week, has also confirmed Gomes’ fate.
Staying in the Premier League would have triggered a mandatory purchase option. But Marseille knew that was unlikely in January. So, they sanctioned the deal anyway in the hope that Gomes could ‘prove his worth’ in England.
Gomes was also hopeful that he given himself even the slightest chance of making Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Summer transfer likely
He won’t be joining Wolves permanently, nor is he likely to make the World Cup squad either. But a transfer could be on the cards regardless.
The former Lille player has ‘always dreamed’ of playing in the Premier League. And with a contract until 2028, this could be the final window in which Marseille can secure a profit.
The Ligue 1 side would certainly not want Angel Gomes to enter the final year of his deal. A transfer now ‘seems likely’ as a result. That’s unless manager Habib Beye or his successor decide to keep him. But if they did, a new contract would be required.
That’s a decision for Marseille to make in the coming months. For now, one thing is certain, Gomes will not be staying at Wolves. Their relegation back to the Championship has confirmed that at least.
