Wolverhampton Wanderers were always Matheus Cunha’s ‘first choice’ in January, despite him having ‘several suitors’ in England.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who cover the Brazilian’s impending move to Molineux today after it took a major leap forward yesterday.
Reports last night made it clear that Cunha would be joining Wolves next month on loan with a mandatory purchase clause included for the summer.
The deal has advanced to the point where there is a growing confidence the forward will become Julen Lopetegui’s first signing at the club, with a medical already booked in.
The forward has been linked with a move to the Premier League for weeks after it became clear Atlético Madrid were keen on a sale as they look to fill a hole in their finances.
Several English sides have been linked with a move but Estadio say that the Cunha ‘opted’ for Wolves so he can link up with Lopetegui.
According to them the Wolves boss ‘did not hesitate to bring out his artillery’ to convince the Brazilian into the switch and reinforce his forward options.
Key to that was offering him the playing time that the player has not enjoyed under Diego Simeone at Atlético, where he has slowly slid down the pecking order.
Wolves has ‘always been his first choice’ despite having ‘several suitors’ at his door, and the difficult situation they currently find themselves in in the league.
That should come as warm news for their fans, who will now be hoping the Brazilian can help them with their issue of scoring goals to get them out of that situation.
