Granit Xhaka’s move to Sunderland was one of the most intriguing transfers of the summer.

The midfielder has now played every minute of the Black Cats’ season and has also assisted once, clearly showing why he is going to be a key player in the campaign.

Backing for Xhaka’s move to Sunderland has now come from former Germany international Stefan Effenberg, who spoke to 20 Minuten about the 32-year-old midfielder.

He described the transfer as a win-win situation for both parties involved.

The 57-year-old said: “Understandable from his point of view. Sure – you’re going to a newly promoted Premier League team, but he achieved everything at Leverkusen, won the league, won the cup—that’s all you can do there.”

Effenberg insisted it was Xhaka’s dream to play in England again, having had a long stint at Arsenal.

“It was his dream to play in England again, and it’s probably worth it financially. Leverkusen also received a high transfer fee, so it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

Bayer Leverkusen earned €20m from the midfielder’s sale and while that isn’t much for an English club, it is a significant fee for a 32-year-old.

Xhaka will form the backbone of the side and having had the experience of winning silverware in England and in Germany, he will also act as a leader for Regis Le Bris.
