David Raya has been the first-choice goalkeeper at Brentford since he joined them from Blackburn Rovers in 2019.
The Spain international was one of the key figures as the Bees achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2021. This season, he has conceded 28 goals and kept six clean sheets from 19 league matches.
Raya was part of La Roja’s squad at the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Morocco. AS interviewed the goalkeeper and after discussing Spain’s campaign in Qatar, Raya was asked whether he has noticed he has become an idol at Brentford.
Responding to that, he said: “I don’t know about that, but I do consider myself an important part of the team and the club. I fit in very well from the first moment, the fans love me a lot and the love is mutual.”
There have been rumours about the Spaniard leaving Thomas Frank’s side at the end of this season. The newspaper pressed the 27-year-old if he is excited about the possibility of facing a bigger challenge away from Brentford.
“Every player has goals and wants to improve. Now I am focused on my team and in the summer, we will see what happens,” Raya explained.
The player’s contract will run down in 2024 and without a renewal the summer window will be Brentford’s last opportunity to cash in big from his sale.
“If they want to do business, they will have to do it but there is a long season left and I am only focused on doing it well. In the summer, we will assess my situation,” Raya added.
