An injury to Nathaniel Clyne forced Jürgen Klopp to start Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool’s trip to face Manchester United in January 2017.
The right-back went on to make one more start that season and then added 18 more starts to his name in the 2017/18 campaign. It was not until the start of the last term the 21-year-old really began to shine.
Since the start of last season, the England international has managed 26 assists in all competitions and has been an integral member of the Reds’ squad that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019.
Swedish newspaper Sportbladet visited Melwood to interview the player, and he explained why he has no plans to leave Liverpool.
“I’ve always wanted to be a club legend. Winning titles, playing as many matches as possible, winning matches, becoming captain…” he said.
“Of course, I can’t become a legend if I leave Liverpool to play elsewhere. So, my focus is there and on making the club as successful as possible.”
“I will probably continue in the sport in some way, but if it’s as a TV expert or coach we will see. Football can of course look completely different in 10-15 years,” he stressed.
The Liverpool star also spoke about Klopp, saying: “He (Jürgen Klopp) always talks about how we can improve, what we can do to get into the team, what we have to do to make it happen, says the player.”
“It’s obviously something you have to hear as a young player. You have to feel that the manager may give you a chance.”
When further quizzed how important is it to have a manager who constantly communicates, he added: “Huge. You never begin to doubt yourself if the manager tells you what you need to do or what you need to improve in order to play.”
