Brentford winger Mikkel Damsgaard didn’t mind facing the press following an embarrassing defeat with the national team at the weekend.

Denmark had been leading Kazakhstan 0-2 until the 73rd minute of the match, when a surprising comeback from the home side turned made the final score 3-2.

There’s been heavy pressure from the Danish media to get an explanation for that result, and with journalists surrounding the players, the Brentford attacker revealed what happened after the match (via Ekstra Bladet).

“There was no shouting and screaming, but demands were made on each other,” said Mikkel Damsgaard.

“We told each other that we must look inward, and promised each other that this will never happen again. It is only us who bear the responsibility, and we must find a completely different mentality now.”

He was even asked if that was the biggest disappointment he’s ever had with the national team.

“I don’t know that. The World Cup was rather disappointing, but in terms of results, yes. That’s enough. Kazakhstan is a team we have to beat ten out of ten times.”

Denmark had already been victorious over Finland in this international break, and following the loss to Kazakhstan, players are returning to their clubs.

Following a €15m move from Sampdoria last summer, Damsgaard is still fighting to conquer his place at Brentford. He only has one assist in 19 appearances so far, having played both on the wings and in central midfield.

The Bees currently stand eighth in the Premier League, and that allows them to dream of a place in the Europa League next year. Their next challenge is against Brighton & Hove Albion, who share the same aspirations, on Saturday.
