Mason Mount came through the ranks of Chelsea’s youth system and spent the last two seasons on loan at Vitesse and Derby County.
The 20-year-old played under Frank Lampard at the Championship side and after the latter was appointed as manager at Stamford Bridge in the summer, the midfielder was included in the Blues’ first team.
Mount has impressed for the Europa League winners this season and his performances for the club have seen him make his debut for England in September.
He now returns to the Netherlands for a short trip as Chelsea take on Ajax in the Champions League. His former Vitesse teammates Mitchell van Bergen and Thomas Bruns have spoken to NOS, and they opened up about their experience of playing alongside Mount.
Van Bergen, who is now at SC Heerenveen, took the opportunity to make a bold prediction about Mount’s future.
“I look at Chelsea matches more often because of him. He got his chance there and took hold of it. And he’s also knocking on the door of the English national team. That doesn’t surprise me,” Van Bergen said.
“Mason is going to reach the absolute top. In the Premier League he will be a complete player and I see him eventually ending up at FC Barcelona or Real Madrid. I think he will fit there.”
Chelsea fans would probably prefer it if Mount continued his progression and stayed where he is, the last thing they need is him turning into a real club star and one of the Spanish giants buzzing around.
They’ve been in the that situation before.
