The less exciting aspect of moves during the January transfer window are outgoing deals, but it’s business which needs to be done to allow the more attractive incoming transfers to take place.

Even less exciting than a straightforward sale is a loan exit, and perhaps even a step further down from that is a loan swap. That is what Maxwel Cornet is going through at the moment as he prepares to swap his Southampton loan from West Ham for a new adventure.

The 28-year-old moved from West Ham to Southampton on loan for this season and it’s been a complete disaster, with hardly any minutes and hardly any impact. It was a similar story with the Hammers last season and Cornet has’t got close to fulfilling the potential which was placed on him when he moved from Burnley.

Now he can give things a whirl in Serie A.

Corriere dello Sport report he’s signing for Genoa until the end of the season. West Ham have given the ‘green light’ and the transfer can be completed.

Gazzetta dello Sport report Cornet ‘will arrive tonight’ and can then go through his Genoa medical tomorrow morning. The signing is said to be a move to please manager Patrick Vieira after his pleas for a left winger.

Maxwel Cornet has a contract with West Ham lasting until June 2027.
