Leeds United currently find themselves sitting pretty at the top of the Championship and looking very well placed for promotion back to the Premier League.

They’re two points clear of Sheffield United in second, and crucially are now seven points clear of third placed Burnley.

Securing promotion to England’s top flight will be huge for the entire squad, and it’s obviously something being eagerly looked forward to.

Ilia Gruev joined Leeds United from Werder Bremen in August 2023 and has grown in stature with the Yorkshire club. That rise was brought to a halt by a serious knee injury which required surgery.

The 24-year-old is fit again, working his way back into the core plans of Daniel Farke whilst making sure his recovery isn’t rushed to his own detriment.

Gruev has spoken to German magazine Kicker about his situation and how he’s found life since his move from German to English football.

It all sounds positive for Leeds United, as he explains he’s been impressed by the size of the club: “At the beginning, I didn’t really realise what a big club Leeds is. When you walk through the city, you see lots of people with jerseys and scarves everywhere. That’s when you realise how important the club is.”

He also said he’s getting his rhythm back after the lengthy injury layoff and is very much looking forward to promotion: “You should always have goals and dreams, and my goal is to play at the very highest level one day.

“We want to be promoted straight away and, in the best case, become champions. The Premier League is the best league in the world, and as an ambitious person and athlete, I want to compete with the best. The move was a very good step for me.”
