When Premier League clubs scout Portuguese league games, we often have to wonder which players the officials have an eye on.
But when it’s West Ham scouting Sporting, that’s when the local newspapers are not afraid to say the London side have one special target: William Carvalho.
That’s what is written by A Bola today, as when reporting the list of scouts who were present at the game, they say West Ham ‘won’t let William go’.
What the emissaries saw was a quite heroic (and controversial) comeback from Sporting against Tondela, as the Lions scored the winner in the 98th minute.
In case West Ham were really watching Carvalho, they saw a regular performance. He couldn’t defend well in the first half, but then improved his game and even worked well as a centre-back when Mathieu got sent off. He was one of those responsible for distributing the ball when the team needed the victory, and did a decent job as always.
Scouts from Manchester City, Manchester United, Nice, Montpellier and Borussia Dortmund were all present at the game as well.
West Ham’s efforts to sign Carvalho are well known and led to a public spat with Sporting. Hopefully it’s just as entertaining if the Hammers return for the midfielder in the summer.
