West Ham United ‘tried everything’ to overtake Marseille in the battle for Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley.

That’s according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, who reports that Marseille have now finalised a deal for the 22-year-old Burnley defender.

According to his information, Egan-Riley has now completed a medical with the French side and signed a four-year contract.

He says West Ham had tried to intervene in the transfer in the final stretch and ‘tried everything’ to overtake Marseille with a new offer to the player. It is not made clear what this offer was.

They were unsuccessful, though, as Egan-Riley only wanted to join Marseille. He was won over by the presentation given to him by Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi and sporting director Medhi Benatia.

That was enough for him to turn his back on West Ham and complete a move to France when his Burnley contract expires at the end of the month. They have already announced his departure.

That leaves him set to join Marseille on a free transfer and everything is done on that front, despite West Ham’s late attempt to turn him around.
