The statement from Benfica saying there are no negotiations with West Ham for the transfer of João Félix has been taken very seriously by the Portuguese press today.

All the local newspapers are buying the Eagles’ version of the story, which says that they have no intention of letting the 18-year-old go.

With Benfica claiming that Félix is part of their plans for the season, outlet Jornal de Notícias says that the club ‘left it for people to understand between the lines’ that the player is non negotiable.

The local press adds that João Félix has a contract running until 30 June 2022, and is currently protected by a huge €60m release clause.

This story grew yesterday, when Sky Sports claimed that the negotiations between West Ham and Benfica were advanced, with both clubs keen on completing the move.

Given the big coverage the local outlets had about the rumour, the Eagles felt forced to publicly announce that there’s nothing going on, saying West Ham are not getting the youngster in this transfer window.
