West Ham United were battling with AS Monaco to sign OH Leuven’s Ezechiel Banzuzi in the winter market.
On February 7th, Leuven sporting director György Csepregi stated the 20-year-old was disappointed to have not change clubs. He also insisted Banzuzi is likely to leave after this season.
West Ham are still said to be in the picture to sign Banzuzi, along with Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg.
That’s according to Bild, who mention the trio in a report that focuses on Leipzig’s efforts to sign the midfielder.
West Ham have ‘tired to sign’ the Netherlands U21 international but will lose the battle to Leipzig, who are about the finalise the operation. The report states the player will arrive in Germany on Monday to undergo medical tests with the Bundesliga club.
If there are no concerns with these tests, the player is expected to sign a contract until 2030 with Leipzig. The operation will cost them around €16m and he will join the German club in the summer.
These developments will come as a blow for West Ham and others who showed interest in the player.
Banzuzi has managed three goals and six assists from 31 games for Leuven this season.
