West Ham are reportedly chasing Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri. According to reports from Italy, the Hammers are in talks with Maldonado to sign the player this summer, and the speculation between club and player isn’t something new.
Tutto Mercato Web says the negotiations have “seriously” started, as the English side are now finding the best solution and method to convince Maldonado. Calleri is currently on loan at São Paulo, where his contract expires in July.
Maldonado are a Uruguayan club used by investors to sign players who have potential to increase i value.
They bought Calleri from Boca Juniors for €11m in January and immediately sent him on loan to São Paulo, where he’s having a good season and now has attracted interest from Europe. Between the Brazilian League and Copa Libertadores, Calleri has 9 goals in 12 games this season.
This is the second time in a week that Tutto Mercato Web exclusively claim negotiations for Calleri from an English club. On June 14, they also said that Tottenham were preparing to make a bid for the player.
True or not, these stories mean they’ve been well briefed about a move to the Premier League.
Calleri’s desire to play in Europe was made public a long time ago, but the player still waits for his EU passport to be granted, hoped for due to an Italian heritage.
He has also been linked to several Italian clubs, the country where all these rumors seem to be starting.
