West Ham United star Crysencio Summerville has called for the Netherlands to remain calm ahead of the World Cup, despite the shock defeat to Algeria.
Ronald Koeman’s side were beaten 1-0 by the African nation this week in one of their World Cup warm up games.
It was a disappointing result for the Dutch, to say the least, and has, naturally, led to some concerns ahead of the World Cup this summer. The West Ham star, though, doesn’t believe there’s a need for panic.
“We have to stay calm. Of course, it is a shame that we lost, but we still have a friendly match before the World Cup starts. Against Japan, we have to be ready for that,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.
First Netherlands appearance
The 24-year-old was handed his first start for his nation in the game, having been a surprise inclusion in the World Cup squad earlier this month.
He was keen to impress, having turned down the opportunity to play for Suriname to secure his dream of playing for the Netherlands. He was happy with what he showed in the defeat but know he needs more.
“I was really in the zone,” he added.
“There were a few sloppy moments where I need to be sharper. In the final pass or when delivering the right assist. Overall, it was okay. Still, I stand here with mixed feelings, because I would have liked to win.”
Koeman contacts
The West Ham forward is keen to repay the faith shown in him by Ronald Koeman. And admits that he’s had plenty of conversations with the coach about what he wants from him.
“We’ve had a lot of contact,” he concluded.
“He knows me and my game. For a winger like me, it’s nice to receive the manager’s confidence. I have to live up to that confidence. Every manager wants players who are reliable and will go through fire for the team. I’m also ready for the next match.”
