West Ham United star Crysencio Summerville has admitted he’s left Suriname a little disappointed by focusing on playing for the Netherlands.
NU.nl cover comments from the West Ham forward today following a press conference with the Netherlands. The 24-year-old is set to make his debut for the Dutch in the coming weeks ahead the World Cup.
Netherlands choice
Crysencio Summerville has, in fact, never played for the Netherlands at senior level. He was set to do so in the last international break, before an injury put an end to those plans.
The forward has been focused on playing for the Netherlands, despite efforts from Suriname to get him to change allegiance.
They’re now managed by Dutch manager Henk ten Cate, who has worked to various success convincing Dutch players to change allegiance. He held talks with Summerville about doing the same. The West Ham star, though, resisted all efforts.
That paid off as he’s now heading to the World Cup with Ronald Koeman and co. And he admits that meant leaving Ten Cate and his Suriname team disappointed.
“I was in contact with Henk ten Cate earlier this year,” he said.
“They were a bit disappointed. But I strive for the highest possible goal. For me, that is the Dutch national team.”
Changing opinions
Now the focus is on changing opinions of him in the Netherlands. There is still some doubt about the forward’s attitude, which was brought in to question at Feyenoord.
He was, and still is, seen as a difficult character. Summerville, though, has never understood that label.
“People said I was a difficult boy. Those are opinions. You can’t change that, although I have certainly become more mature in England,” he added.
West Ham exit
The World Cup may not be the only big moment for him this summer either. With West Ham relegated and needing sales, Crysencio Summerville is the first name on the list.
Clubs are already lining up to potentially take him away from the London Stadium. Roma have been monitoring the situation for a while. Tottenham are also reportedly keen as well.
First, though, is the World Cup, where he may be able to draw up even more interest with his performances.
