Portuguese newspaper A Bola has a big story on William Carvalho today, mostly because of his good and confident Champions League performance against Olympiacos.
There’s a big reason for that. After having his move to West Ham collapsed this summer, the player met the Sporting board and several promises were made. One from each side was fulfilled against the Greeks: the player is still giving his best for the club, and as a prize for his loyalty, he was given the captain’s armband.
But the rumour of a departure isn’t going away anytime soon, especially as this week the English press claimed that West Ham are still keen on bringing the midfielder to the club.
That alleged West Ham interest is of course covered in Portugal.
There were several different reports saying how much West Ham had offered for the player during the transfer window, but none of them said it was more than €40m. So in case they really go for William this time, the price is significantly rising, and it will have to be paid in one go.
With the tense atmosphere left by both clubs after the public fight they were in, it was obvious that a new round of negotiations wouldn’t friendly.
It’s unlikely West Ham would pay €45m for Carvalho, and if he gets to the stage that €45m seems a reasonable price, then there’s likely to be other clubs coming in anyway.
