That AS Roma want Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham United this summer is nothing new, but there will be some new movements in their attempts to get him.
The latest comes from Corriere dello Sport in Italy, who start off by revealing that the player, currently on holiday with his girlfriend, sister and friends, is now ‘enjoying his last days off’ before returning to the Hammers for pre-season.
He and his phone are ‘waiting for news from his agent’, as the West Ham striker, who was bought from Sassuolo just last summer, ‘wants to go home’.
AS Roma, down their end, ‘want to try and please him’, as they want him to help out as Tammy Abraham recovers from a serious knee injury.
It’s been well reported that the Italians want him to first come on loan with an option to buy, while West Ham would much prefer to see him leave permanently if they are to entertain his exit.
This is something the two clubs ‘will talk about in the coming days’, as they will ‘have contact to try to open at least a glimmer of negotiation to be carried on in the coming weeks’.
Roma will ‘reiterate their interest in Scamacca and their willingness to meet West Ham’s needs’.
First, however, they are trying to get a deal for Davide Frattesi sorted with Sassuolo, but if that wasn’t to happen, they would ‘divert those millions’ towards West Ham, where they would make a loan offer ‘for a couple of million’ with an obligation to buy, which is ‘so dear’ to the Hammers.
However, this would not be linked to a number of appearances, but to a number of goals, giving the player an extra incentive to find the back of the net and get his full-time return to Italy sorted.
Roma have to be careful with this, however, because if they do get Frattesi and also manage to offload other players to fund the arrival of Scamacca, they could end up with Andrea Belotti, Tammy Abraham and the former Sassuolo man, who will all take up a large chunk of their wage budget.
They would then have to hope the England international comes back firing so they can sell him on next summer, which is no guarantee after his serious setback.
Therefore, the Serie A side ‘must be able to find the best solution to make everyone happy’, and if they can’t, they will have to turn their attention to someone other than the West Ham man.
