West Ham are keen on Hertha Berlin forward Salomon Kalou but did not make their first bid for him until late last night.

Kalou is out of favour at Hertha and has been pushed further down the pecking order by the arrival of Krzysztof Piątek earlier this week.

Kicker reported yesterday that West Ham had ‘sent a request’ for the player, although it was not made clear if there was an official bid.

They have now updated their story and confirm that the Hammers are keen and had ‘expressed general interest’ in midweek.

However, they did not ‘substantiate’ this interest until late on Thursday evening when they made a ‘specific offer’ for the 34-year-old.

That has made a return to England – Kalou spent six years playing at Chelsea – ‘questionable’, with both clubs pushing to get a deal done ahead of their respective transfer deadlines.

Indeed, Kalou has hinted that a move may not be that advanced, revealing he was waiting for the Hammers to call in an interview with Bild.

If a move to West Ham doesn’t happen, Kalou has offers from elsewhere, with his management having held negotiations with franchises in MLS for the last few weeks.
