As West Ham United head into the final stretch of the season, it’s fair to say that following two successful campaigns in the top half of the table, few would have expected the struggles of the current one.
David Moyes is still in the job thanks to the work he has done in the past, but should the Hammers fail to redress the situation between now and June, he will surely go.
If he does manage to keep West Ham up, though, the Scottish manager should be given a new chance to bolster his squad, where a new midfielder could do some good.
How much the club will be willing to spend remains to be seen, but there are some cheap and talented options out there, like Joan González.
The 21-year-old midfielder is currently at Lecce in Italy, and has been linked with West Ham since December, when it was claimed the London side were sending scouts to watch him.
That interest appears to have continued beyond the last transfer window, as Toro.it, looking at the many players who could be sold by the aforementioned Serie A side in the summer, name the London Stadium residents as still being interested.
They claim West Ham, alongside the likes of Tottenham and Everton in the Premier League, have ‘eyes on’ on the player, currently valued at €15m.
While Lecce would likely be open to a sale at that amount, considering it cost them nothing to grab him from Barcelona’s youth teams in 2021, you would think being in the Premier League would be primordial for him to consider a move to the Hammers.
