West Ham target Mateo Retegui has been a big subject in the Italian media since his call-up for the national team.

Even though the 22-year-old was born and raised in Argentina, where he plays for Tigre, he made it to the Azzurri in the recent international break.

Speaking of the player, Torino director Walter Sabatini has been very harsh when interviewed by bttfnews (via TuttoMercatoWeb).

The club chief claimed that there’s nothing exceptional about the youngster, and doesn’t believe he’ll be such a wanted man in the transfer window.

“Retegui is a very normal player. Then I see that in penalty area he knows some movement, but from here to say that he’s a player for the national team there is a lot.

“If he were to become a market man it means that the clubs are at the gas barrel. He’s a normal player, he doesn’t have exceptional strengths, he’s a normal player in everything he does. But it must be said to be honest that a striker who plays two games and scores twice is already on a good path. But it is the exaltation of normality.”

The links between West Ham and Retegui have been growing in the past few days. We first saw claims saying the Hammers have been in contact and ‘asked for information’ on the player, and then the Italian media saying the London side are one of the clubs who could offer a ‘shower of pounds’ for the signing.

The striker is undoubtedly drawing some attention at Tigre, but it seems we’ll have to wait until the summer to see if all those rumours will turn into offers from West Ham and the other clubs who’ve been linked. Only then we can say whether Sabatini is right or wrong.
