At the start of last month, we relayed news from Italy that West Ham United are still in the race for Napoli’s Nikola Maksimović.

It was also stated the Hammers were previously hoping to find an agreement with the Serie A side for the defender’s transfer for €25m, but Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wasn’t keen.

The defender’s current deal runs down at the end of the season and that will see him attract interest from elsewhere.

Italian journalist and Napoli expert Ciro Venerato gave an interview to Kiss Kiss Napoli’s Radio Goal, where he provided a short update on the English club’s interest in the centre-back.

“Maksimovic could greet Napoli also for a tactical issue, but it is not only Inter Milan that likes him. West Ham are also on his trail,” Venerato said, as relayed by Area Napoli.

Fabián Balbuena and Craig Dawson are two of the five centre-backs available at David Moyes’ disposal.

The duo have contracts expiring in the summer and the Paraguayan’s agent has confirmed his client will leave the London club in the next market.

West Ham may look to bring in a new central defender in the summer and the need will only increase if Dawson also leaves the club.
