West Ham United were one of the clubs to make ‘powerful offers’ for Granada star Bryan Zaragoza but were beaten to the transfer by a surprise move from Bayern Munich.
That’s according to Cadena SER, who cover the player’s imminent move to the Allianz Arena today and how the Germans have trumped the competition for him.
The outlet covers how Bayern have moved for the midfielder, who they confirmed as a new signing earlier today after something of a surprise move last night for him.
They’ve agreed a deal that will see them sign the Spaniard this year but leave him on loan at Girona until the end of the season, something the player had wanted and suits the red and white team perfectly.
They could not afford to turn down the money offered, with Bayern failing to pay his release clause and instead negotiating a deal with Granada instead.
Cadena SER explain Bayern managed to jump ahead of plenty of competition, stating that Zaragoza also had ‘powerful offers’ from Red Bull Leipzig, Brentford and West Ham ahead of January.
The other two have regularly been linked in the last few weeks but West Ham’s apparent interest is new, with them not mentioned until now.
Perhaps they showed a late interest when the details around Zaragoza’s release clause, which was believed to be €14m, came to light as the likes of Brentford tried to get him.
Either way it’s all a case of too little too late now anyway as Bayern have swooped in and wrapped things up, although it does perhaps suggest West Ham may be in the market in January if the price is right.
