For years, Nico Gaitan was on the verge of a move to Manchester United according to the Portuguese press, and some English newspapers who grabbed their coat-tails, but ended up signing for Atletico Madrid instead.

It’s fair to say the transfer from Benfica hasn’t worked out for Gaitan, who has gone from being an absolute hero and crucial player in Lisbon to a bit part at Atletico.

The Spanish club are looking to get rid of him this month, and half the Premier League have been linked. A couple of weeks ago we brought claims from Spain that West Ham are serious with their Gaitan interest and were making efforts.

Now, TMW claim: ‘West Ham, despite the arrival from Inter of the Portuguese Joao Mario, is constantly pressing to get their hands on the Argentine player.’

What would an Italian website know about a Argentine, who is represented by his family, in Spain potentially moving to England? There may well be agents trying to get involved or perhaps it slipped during West Ham’s Mario talks.

Atletico will be looking for around €17-20m but as the window grows older they may have to reevaluate that and also consider a loan.
