Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has insisted that they are working to try and get the best out of Philippe Coutinho at the club.

The Brazilian midfielder has struggled this season after making a loan move from Barcelona permanent in the summer.

He arrived from the Nou Camp in January last year and made an immediate impact at Villa Park, putting in a series of impressive performances under Steven Gerrard and showing signs of being the Coutinho that was at Liverpool once again.

He has struggled to maintain that this season, though, failing to score or assist a goal in 18 Premier League games so far and falling out of favour under Gerrard and now Emery.

The 30-year-old has featured in just 37% of the available minutes in the league so far and numerous reports, especially during the January transfer window, have linked him with a move away from Aston Villa.

Indeed, the belief is that he is not a part of Unai Emery’s plans moving forwards but the Spanish coach has quelled that somewhat, insisting he and everyone else at Aston Villa are working  to get the best out of the midfielder.

“He is working in training with a humility that is difficult to assume for a player who has been at the top of the game for years, which makes him an important value for me,” AS report him saying to DAZN.

“I think that between all of us, myself included, we’ll try to help him to bring out his best.”
