Southampton may soon face a decision on Welington as the Brazilian market begins to circle around a player who has struggled for consistent minutes this season.

As we covered at the time, he was signed from São Paulo for €425k (£369k) in 2024. He played 10 Premier League games in Saints’ 2024/25 relegation season, but kept his place in the squad.

Now the left-back has featured 17 times in the Championship during the 2025/26 campaign, but his role has fluctuated. That situation often creates opportunities, and clubs in Brazil are now starting to look closely at his availability.

Despite limited starts, Welington’s underlying numbers suggest there is more to his game than his current role indicates. He has provided two assists so far, while averaging 1.07 key passes per match.

In addition, his expected assists stands at 0.22 per 90 minutes, placing him above 87% of Championship players in that metric.

His passing profile also remains solid. The defender averages close to 40 passes per game with an 80.98% completion rate. That level of involvement points to a player comfortable in build-up phases, something that can appeal to possession-focused sides.

Defensively, the numbers are mixed but active. Southampton have conceded 12 goals across his 17 appearances, with six clean sheets in that time.

Individually, Welington averages 2.91 tackles and 1.46 interceptions per 90 minutes, alongside 2.23 clearances. Those figures underline a player who engages regularly in defensive actions.

Brazil interest but no Southampton contact yet

Welington is now being looked at by Palmeiras, according to Bolavip, who see the Southampton player as a potential market opportunity. The Brazilian side are assessing several factors, including cost, adaptation and his current role in England.

However, there has been no formal move. Contact with the player’s camp has not taken place, and there are no negotiations underway at this stage. The situation is firmly one of monitoring rather than action.

That stance is important, especially as Palmeiras are prioritising other areas of their squad. A centre-back and a midfielder are currently higher on their list, which naturally delays any concrete approach for a full-back.

Flamengo are also keeping an eye on the situation, which could introduce competition if things develop. For now, though, both clubs remain in a watching brief.

Palmeiras need solutions fast

That interest also comes with context. Palmeiras are currently short at left-back due to injuries. And as their season follows the calendar year, the summer window is a strategic moment to reinforce the squad for the final stretch of the campaign.

Their starting left-back Joaquín Piquerez suffered ligament damage in his right ankle during the last international break and required surgery. Early estimates suggest a return only in the second semester.

Meanwhile, his competitor Jefté, signed from Rangers for around €7m (£6m), picked up a thigh injury. While not serious, it will keep him out for the next few weeks.

As a result, Palmeiras relied on a 20-year-old academy player, Arthur, who has already stepped ahead in the pecking order, but also suffered cramps in the latest outing.

That forced a temporary solution, with right-back Khellven used on the left late in the game. However, that adjustment impacts attacking balance, especially when playing on the weaker foot for crossing situations.

In the end, the Brazilian side are already targeting solutions to avoid those problems in the second half of the season.

What happens next for Southampton

From Southampton’s perspective, the coming weeks could shape Welington’s future. His current lack of prominence suggests the club may be open to solutions, particularly if interest becomes concrete.

At the same time, his statistical output shows there is a player capable of contributing in both phases of the game. That balance may yet convince Southampton to reassess his role rather than move him on quickly.

For now, there is no offer, no talks, and no immediate pressure. Still, the conditions for a potential move are beginning to form, and that alone puts the situation on alert heading into the next window.
