Andre Onana

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has been on loan at Trabzonspor since last September.

He was the No.1 for the last two seasons but lost his place to Altay Bayındır at the start of this season.

Onana dropped further down the pecking order following Senne Lammens’ arrival at Manchester United last summer.

This convinced the Red Devils to sanction a loan move, and the 30-year-old has been the first choice in Turkey.

He has six clean sheets and conceded 35 goals from 28 matches. The goalkeeper’s league stats are as follows:

  • Appearances: 26
  • Starts: 26
  • Clean sheets: 6
  • Goals conceded: 31
  • Total saves: 71
  • Saves per game: 2.7
  • Penalties saved: 0/2

Two months ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Turkey that his loan spell hasn’t gone well. Therefore, the Cameroon international was expected to return to Old Trafford after this season.

On March 6th, Trabzonspor vice-president Zeyyat Kafkas said Manchester United aim to collect €40-45m from his sale. He also said the player plans to join a European club if there’s no future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United man’s heroics

André Onana starred for Trabzonspor in their Turkish Cup win over Samsunspor on Thursday.

The outcome of the tie was decided via a shootout and the Manchester United owned player saved three of four penalties. His heroics helped the Turkish club make it to the semi final.

After the tie, Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan publicly expressed his desire to retain the former Inter Milan man beyond his loan spell. NTV Spor have relayed his comments.

“Onana’s career is already established. We like him. I’ve said this before. He has a certain plan for his career. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay. The final decision will be Onana’s,” he said.

Our take: Manchester United also have say

The goalkeeper moved to Turkey on loan without an option or obligation to buy and has to return to Old Trafford after this season.

His contract with Manchester United lasts until 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €12m.

If André Onana were to agree to continue with the Süper Lig club, then an agreement has to be found with the Red Devils. Trabzonspor will likely push for a further loan, and United will want a permanent transfer.
