Aleksandr Golovin was at the peak of his fame at the conclusion of the 2018 World Cup.

Leicester City were one of the clubs linked with the player but the Russian joined AS Monaco from CSKA Moscow and has been there since. He’s played 12 times in all competitions this season, having returned from a serious injury some months ago.

Golovin is yet to score or assist this season and former Monaco player and ex-Leicester City manager Claude Puel spoke to Nice-Matin about the midfielder’s situation.

The Frenchman stated that Golovin has to give more to the team, while also revealing that he wanted to bring the 28-year-old to the King Power Stadium at one point.

He told the outlet: “He’s a player I followed when he was in Russia and I was at Leicester. We offered him a place but he switched to Monaco.”

Speaking further about Golovin, the ex-Foxes boss said: “He had a good season last season, he found himself in Hütter’s game. He was slowed down by injuries but he has to start again on the same criteria.

“He must be more demanding of himself through his stats and must bring much more to the team.”

Despite being at Monaco for over six years, Golovin has never crossed the ten goal mark in Ligue 1. The most goals he’s scored in a single league season is eight.

Whether it would have been any different at Leicester City will never be known.
