So far this season, Victor Lindelöf has made three appearances for Aston Villa in the Premier League. All of which have come off the bench.
The defender had a difficult injury record during his last few seasons at Manchester United. Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has this week questioned whether Lindelöf can play an entire game for the national team.
These doubts around the new Aston Villa signing are refusing to go away. Sweden take on Switzerland this week and their manager was asked directly about Lindelöf’s involvement.
The Swedish media have taken various hints to mean Lindelöf ‘cannot start’ the match.
Jon Dahl Tomasson is quoted by FotbolSkanalen as saying: “We’ll have to wait and see if Victor starts or not.”
The manager further spoke of a curse as every captain has been plagued with injuries at some point – including Lindelöf.
He said: “We have a bit of a captain’s curse. I tried with Lindelöf, he hasn’t always been here due to injuries, and it’s been a bit the same with Alexander Isak. “Kulu” (Dejan Kulusevski) has also been captain and is now out.”
Whilst he hasn’t faced injuries at Aston Villa, Lindelöf had a raft of problems at Manchester United. In his last two seasons at Old Trafford, his game time was severely limited.
He joined the club late in the summer and didn’t have a preseason with Unai Emery’s side.
