Trabzonspor President Ertugrul Dogan has told the Turkish media they are still trying to sign Southampton forward Paul Onuachu.

The Nigeria international has also been linked with fellow Super Lig side Besiktas in recent weeks after impressing whilst on loan with Trabzonspor last season.

However, it seems Trabzonspor are back in the race to sign the Southampton player following their failed attempts to get him in the summer.

Speaking A Spor, Dogan said they reached an agreement with the 30-year-old to return to Trabzon, but now they need Southampton to accept an offer.

Dogan has claimed the Premier League side keep moving the goal posts in their valuation of the attacker, but are still in talks to sign him.

“We had agreed with Onuachu. We’re still seeing each other. Southampton asked for 7, we gave them that, they asked for 10, we went up to 8-9 with bonuses, then they increased it to 15. So, they weren’t going to give him to us. Therefore, we had to not offend our club somewhere. If it is not on our terms, we will not be able to make this transfer,” said the Trabzonspor chief.

Onuachu made 16 appearances for Southampton this season, but has rarely started games. In contrast, the Nigerian was a key player for Trabzonspor last season, scoring 17 goals in 25 games for the Super Lig side.

The Turkish transfer window doesn’t close until February 11th so Trabzonspor, along with Besiktas, have the luxury of another week to get a deal over the line for the centre-forward.

Onuachu is contracted to the Premier League side until June 2026
