Brazilian fans are losing it. Social media has been flooded with calls for Igor Thiago to be picked for the national team, and the noise around the Brentford striker grows with every goal.
His Premier League form has impressed England for weeks. Now it is driving a full-blown debate back home.
A growing feeling that Brazil still need a number nine
For many Brazilians, the squad already looks almost complete… Only missing a true number nine. That sense of an obvious gap has pushed Igor Thiago into the spotlight.
His numbers have fuelled the argument. Fans see him as a straightforward answer to a long-running issue in Carlo Ancelotti’s setup. Because of that, calls for a call-up keep getting louder.
Supporters point to his reliability in front of goal rather than flair. The discussion rarely focuses on style. Instead, it centres on output and consistency at the highest level.
Pundit adds weight to the debate
That movement gained real traction when Walter Casagrande stepped in. The former striker is a big voice in Brazilian press, and he suggested Carlo Ancelotti should take a closer look at the Brentford man.
Casagrande praised Igor Thiago’s instant decision-making and his clinical finishing. He admitted he only followed the striker closely in recent matches. Even so, he still backed a call-up. In his view, a test during the March friendlies against France and Croatia would make sense.
“If the moment a player is living matters for a call-up, Igor Thiago really deserves a chance,” Casagrande said.
Fans push the message even further
Online reaction has gone even further. Some supporters framed the argument using Ancelotti’s own preferences.
“Put him in yellow. Ancelotti wants a classic number nine with a number nine’s profile. He has to be called up in the next international break to see his development. Fifteen Premier League goals is not for just anyone,” read one widely shared post.
Others kept it short and loud. Posts saying “We found it!” and calls for “Hello, Ancelotti!!!” are like clockwork.
One comment accepted his limits but still backed a call-up. “He’s not the most skilful. That said, if he keeps this level until the next call-up, he has to be there. He has the most important thing for a striker. He knows how to score goals.”
Whether the noise turns into action remains to be seen. What is clear is that Igor Thiago has moved beyond being just a Brentford success story.
In Brazil, he now represents the feeling that only one role remains open… and that he might be the answer.
