Bayern Munich aren’t bothered that they lost out to Liverpool and Newcastle United this summer. Not one bit, and they’re going to keep telling you.

That’s if the least from CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is anything to go by. BILD cover his latest comments to Welt Am Sonntag today. And, in case it’s not clear, they’re covered in salt.

To explain, Bayern lost out to Liverpool this summer in the battle for Florian Wirtz, with the Reds convincing him Anfield was the best destination for him. He eventually joined in a deal worth anywhere from €125m to €150m depending on who you choose to believe.

They were also beaten to the signing of Nick Woltemade by Newcastle. They had chased him throughout the summer but refused to pay Stuttgart’s demands. Newcastle didn’t hesitate and signed him for €75m.

Bayern have not taken this well and spent the last few months publicly deriding both deals. This includes former CEO Karl Hans-Rummenigge labelling Newcastle as idiots for paying such a fee for the striker.

“We can afford any transfer we want”

They want the entire world to know that, rather than being outspent, they simply decided not to compete with Liverpool or Newcastle for the fees they ended up paying.

Jan-Christian Dreesen has continued that today with his latest comments, which smack of salt and bitterness.

“We can afford any transfer we want,” he said.

“We have an excellent capital ratio; FC Bayern is doing very well. But we want to be able to pay a player – without having to run to the bank. That’s not FC Bayern’s DNA.

“The bottom team in the English league, at €125m, has €60m more in media revenue than us. Liverpool has €200m, while FC Barcelona and Real Madrid each have €160m”
