On Wednesday morning, Portuguese newspaper Record featured a story sounding very sure that Benfica striker Henrique Araujo was ‘on his way’ to Watford.
It was claimed that the clubs ‘already agreed’ a loan move until the end of the season, and that deal would not include an option for a permanent transfer.
It turns out that as Mais Futebol now shares the news on this move, they claim the business between Watford and Benfica is not closed yet.
They even mention Record’s story, but claims that there are still ‘many details’ to be agreed between the clubs.
Since Araujo has been getting little playing time at Benfica, his loan to Watford is seen ‘with good eyes’ so the player can continue with his development.
Mais Futebol recalls that Benfica and Watford recently agreed the transfer of João Ferreira, which proves the good relationship between the clubs, besides the fact that Helena Costa, who now leads the Hornets’ scouting department, had previously worked at the Eagles as well.
Playing for the Lisbon side’s first team, Araujo has five goals in 20 appearances. He’s protected by a €100m release clause.
