When the season started, Watford fans knew Abdoulaye Doucouré could potentially be an important player for them, but they never expected him to be one of their best players on the pitch.

The 25-year-old has had an incredible season to say the least, leading his club’s goalscoring chart in the league with seven goals, which is two more than Richarlison, as well as three assists.

However, it’s his box to box ability that has really caught the eye of many, and SFR Sport, in their show Breaking Foot, dedicated around nine minutes of their program to the Watford midfielder, which included a phone call with the player himself.

Analysing his performances this season and comparing them to the likes of Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolissio, two players on the fringe of Didier Deschamps’ squad, they came to the conclusion that he could be a better all round option for the France manager in Russia this summer.

Asking Doucouré if this is something he was thinking about, he said: “Yes, of course. It’s true that when the season started, my goal was to have a good campaign and catch the eye of Didier Deschamps.

“Now that it’s happening, and that my statistics have made everyone take notice, it would be a dream, everyone wants to play for France and if I was called up, I’d be the happiest guy in the world.”

Understanding that making the squad having never played for France before would be quite hard to achieve, the Watford star isn’t letting that get in the way of his dream.

He’ll continue to play the way he has done, much to the delight of Hornets’ fans around the world.
