When in-form Liverpool welcomed Walter Mazzarri’s Watford to Anfield last weekend, no one thought a surprise result would be on the cards, and they were right.
However, few would have also predicted the 6-1 drubbing Jürgen Klopp’s men dished out at Anfield, completely dismantling the Italian’s plans and tactics with apparent ease.
Now top of the table following the victory, Liverpool and their fans will also take some pleasure in knowing that last weekend’s result was the worst loss of Walter Mazzarri’s career as a manager.
Revealing the information to Corriere dello Sport on Monday, the manager said: “I beat my own record: in all my career, I’d never suffered a defeat of such proportions.
“[My worst loss] was with Sampdoria when we lost 5-1 against Milan. Let’s hope it follows like last time: the next Sunday we went and beat Cagliari.”
Recalling that there have also been some positives, like beating Manchester United for the first time in 30 years, the manager discussed what Watford’s objectives were for the season.
He explained: “The president was very clear. First and foremost, staying up.”
Considering the Hornets are currently eighth in the Premier League with 15 points from their first 11 games, things could be a lot worse.
Then again, they are also only five points clear from the relegation zone.
