Watford’s offer for Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont in the January transfer window involved them only paying 30% of his wages.

That’s according to Ouest France, who cover the offer today and why he didn’t end up at Watford earlier this year.

The newspaper explains that the French side tried to move Lafont on in the January transfer window, with the 26-year-old currently playing a back-up role in their squad.

His current deal runs until 2027 and so it seems the Ligue 1 club sought out any opportunities to move him on, even if it was on a temporary basis.

That proved to be impossible, though. Watford were one of the sides who came forward and made a proposal, but this involved them paying just 30% of his current salary. That was considered too little for FC Nantes and so the deal didn’t happen.

Whether Watford return with another bid for the goalkeeper in the summer remains to be seen, with a busy transfer window expected at Vicarage Road.

Nantes are certainly entering the window looking to do business, with a third of their first-team squad nearing the end of their contracts. Lafont isn’t one of them, but he did have interest from the Hornets in January, albeit via a half-hearted attempt at best.
