Barely used by Watford and Walter Mazzarri so far this season, Christian Kabasele isn’t too worried… yet.

The 25-year-old centre-back, who was signed on July 1st from KRC Genk by the Premier League club, has only played 180 minutes of club football since the start of the season, but that was enough to earn him a call-up to the Belgium national team squad by Roberto Martinez.

Speaking to Sport/Foot Magazine in Belgium, the centre-back opened up about his first few months in England at Vicarage Road.

He said: “They have been very fulfilling! I’ve had to get used to a new environment, a new system and Walter Mazzarri’s way of working, he’s typically Italian, very demanding tactically. The only thing I need to get used to is the bench…

“At Genk, myself and [Sébastien] Dewaest only had youngsters as competition. Here, there’s only internationals. Bad players don’t exist in the Premier League.”

Now a bit more of a regular on the bench, the player spent five of his first six games out of the squad altogether, something he didn’t particularly enjoy.

Kabasele, however, told Sport/Foot that although he felt ‘completely useless’ when it happened, he realised the only way he would change Mazzarri’s mind was in training. Screen Shot 2016-11-23 at 12.58.48

Turning up the next day after having not been a part of the squad, the player explains he trained ‘as if he had been there on game day’ to keep his morale up.

Signing with Watford for five years, Kabasele hopes his time will come, but for him, the big moment will come in January.

He explained: “In a month and a half, the transfer window opens up again. Then, I’ll be able to look back at my first six months in England and evaluate.”

If his game time stays at 180 minutes, he might not want to stick around for much longer.
