Watford still expect Pape Gueye to join them this summer, despite the player now publicly speaking out against the move and insisting that he won’t be moving to the Premier League club this summer.

Monday’s edition of L’Equipe states the 21 year old midfielder, who sees his contract expire with Le Havre this summer, came out at the weekend to say: “I wanted to denounce the circumstances surrounding the signing of a contract with Watford and what I consider to be irregularities directly with their representatives.

“After many discussions, I note to this day that no administrative process concerning me has really been undertaken. Consequently, and considering that the contract has not yet taken effect, I take note of the end of all contractual links with Watford.”

Unfortunately for Gueye, things are unlikely to be that easy for him.

L’Equipe explain that on January 15th, Gueye signed a pre-contract agreement with Watford. Not only that, it’s stated he travelled to Udine twice to go through medical checks at the Pozzo’s family’s other club, Udinese.

It had previously been reported that Gueye was reluctant to go through with his Watford contract because he assumed they’d send him straight out on loan to the Serie A side. Now L’Equipe suggest money could be an issue, with the player ‘feeling financially injured’, hence why he changed agents.

This one will certainly be an interesting situation to watch, and it’s unlikely Watford will simply tear the contract up. The Hornets have ‘declined to comment’, and still expect to Gueye to turn up on July 1st, when his five year contract is set to commence.
