Last week, we covered claims from France about AS Monaco’s approach to sign Watford’s Nampalys Mendy. The mid-season window in the UK and France have already closed. This means the Ligue 1 side can no longer sign him at least until the end of the season.
A fresh report from Foot Mercato backs up Monaco’s interest and covers the latest on the 33-year-old.
As well as Monaco, Stade Rennais had considered signing the Watford player in the winter market. He was an ideal candidate to replace Glen Kamara, but the latter is still at the club.
Arka Gdynia have also come forward to sign the Senegal international. The winter window is still open in Poland, allowing them to take him away from Vicarage Road.
According to the report, the Polish club made a ‘concrete offer’ to the 33-year-old. This included an 18-month contract to make the AFCON winner the highest paid player at Arka Gdynia.
The Hornets seem to be unmoved by the concrete offer made to the Watford player. Foot Mercato state the Championship side have closed the door on Mendy’s exit outside the UK transfer window.
Mendy has played 428 minutes from nine league matches with four starts for Watford this season. On Tuesday, he made his first league start since October in the Hornets’ goalless draw against Hull City.
The defensive midfielder was initially heading towards the exit door. His situation would have changed after new developments at the English club.
Foot Mercato state: ‘This return to favour, coinciding with a change in dynamics on the Hornets’ bench, could well prompt the club to secure their player’s future despite interest from French and Polish clubs, in order to ensure his continued presence in the Championship for the remainder of the season.’
This is likely in relation to Javi Gracia’s decision to resign as Watford manager on Sunday. Mendy hardly enjoyed minutes under the Spaniard.
