João Cancelo wasn’t included in Pep Guardiola’s plans this season and Manchester City allowed him to seal a loan move to Barcelona in the summer window. The La Liga side don’t have an option or obligation to make the right-back’s move permanent.
Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio, relayed by Sport, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said his side will want to retain the Manchester City owned player if he were to extend his good run.
The Portugal international has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, scoring two goals and registering one assist from eight games. His compatriot João Félix, who arrived at the Camp Nou on loan from Atlético Madrid, has also starred for Barca.
Laporta has opened the door to extend the duo’s stay at the club, while also insisting that a final decision will be made by Barca sporting director Deco.
“If they continue playing like this, we will have to make an effort to sign the Joãos, but it all depends on what Deco says. I want the best to always stay with us and I, personally, have liked Félix for a long time,” he said.
Two days ago, Deco admitted that it’s too early to talk about the possibility of extending the 29-year-old and Félix’s stay beyond this season.
A day before that, Sport reported Manchester City will make it very complicated for Barca to buy Cancelo next summer. The player has a deal at the Etihad until 2027.
