It’s fair to say Kieran Trippier’s move to Atlético Madrid was one of the more surprising transfer moves this summer.
Trippier had something of a poor campaign last year after his World Cup exploits with England and there were plenty who raised an eyebrow at the fact he managed to secure such a good move to a club like Atlético after it.
Nonetheless, he got it and this weekend saw him make his debut in the 1-0 win over Getafe on the opening weekend of the La Liga season.
It proved to be a memorable evening for Trippier too as he not only provided the assist for Alvaro Morata’s game-winning goal but also helped his side keep a clean sheet. And it seems everyone was impressed by his performance.
Marca cover his debut on Tuesday and it’s fair to say they are more than enthused about what they saw from Trippier.
They say one of the biggest lessons from the win, aside from João Félix’s status as a rising star, was Trippier’s performance and how he has quickly and seamlessly adapted to life as Atlético’s new right-back.
He’s made such a positive impression that nobody is talking about departed club ‘legend’ Juanfran anymore.
The newspaper says Diego Simeone has always wanted a full-back who is as good going forward as he is defensively and Trippier falls into that bracket.
They even describe him as having a ‘wand of a right foot’, which was seen with his assist for Morata’s goal.
Marca’s praise doesn’t stop there, with them saying it was ‘only a matter of time’ before Trippier bagged his first assist given his performances in pre-season, and predict that he’ll surpass the 24 assists in 114 games he managed for Tottenham.
So, in conclusion, an excellent start to life in Spain for Trippier, who has impressed everyone at Atlético Madrid enormously despite only playing one competitive game for the club.
