Having to deal with yet another injury crisis, Tottenham Hotspur saw Rodrigo Bentancur become unavailable this week. However, the biggest impact of the episode is now being felt well beyond North London.

Uruguayan outlet Tenfield reports that the midfielder’s muscular problem has triggered concern around the national team. Bentancur picked up the issue late in Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat away to Bournemouth. While Spurs await a full medical update, the discussion in Uruguay has already shifted to the broader consequences.

Bentancur has undergone medical tests to assess the extent of the injury, which affects the hamstring area. Tottenham have yet to release an official statement. Thomas Frank admitted the situation does not look encouraging. The Danish coach said the problem “seems more serious, unfortunately”, increasing attention across the Atlantic.

For Uruguay, the timing raises clear concerns. Bentancur is a central figure in Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield plans and is widely viewed as a guaranteed inclusion when fit. With just over five months remaining until the 2026 World Cup, any physical setback becomes a planning issue rather than a routine absence.

March represents one of Bielsa’s final opportunities to assess his squad. Uruguay are scheduled to face England at Wembley on 27 March, a fixture designed to test the group against elite opposition. At 28, Bentancur is in what could be his final World Cup cycle, which adds further weight to the situation.

At this stage, early indications suggest the injury should not rule him out of the March window. Still, both Uruguay and Tottenham now await the club’s medical report, which will determine whether this remains a short-term issue or something with wider implications.

Uruguay are in contact with Spurs, and ‘waiting to receive the medical report’.
