Last season, Viktor Gyökeres scored 43 goals in 50 matches for Sporting CP, adding 15 assists along the way.
So far in the current campaign, the 26-year-old has 20 goals and four assists across 14 matches. That includes finding the back of the net four times against CF Estrella on Friday evening when the world was watching.
Given Manchester United confirmed Rúben Amorim will be their new manager earlier that day, Gyökeres was perhaps getting more attention than ever before and put on something of a show.
Saturday’s edition of Record has him splashed across their front page and states that given the Amorim to Manchester United news, ‘English eyes were watching’ the striker’s performance.
The manager himself has already been asked about Gyökeres potentially moving to Old Trafford, and pointed out the player will cost €100m and that he won’t be taking any players from Sporting in January.
Of course, he didn’t rule out next summer.
Gyökeres himself was asked after the match if he could reunite with Amorim in the future, with the very clear implication being at Manchester United.
Record quote him as replying: “I don’t know, I’m here. I really like being here, it’s not something I think about. I’m enjoying it here.”
