Sevilla director of football Victor Orta has revealed he tried to sign his latest addition, Álvaro Fernández, while he was at Leeds United.
Orta has been speaking at a press conference today, relayed by El Sevillista, about his latest signing and the plans for the rest of the window.
The Spanish club have been busy overhauling the squad this summer, with their struggling finances requiring a need to sell stars and secure replacements on the cheap.
The latest to be secured is 26-year-old Fernández, who has joined on a free transfer from SD Huesca to add to the club’s goalkeeping department, which only had Ørjan Nyland in it before his arrival.
He’s the third free transfer Sevilla have sealed this summer, with their current spend at €8m after sales worth just under €20m.
His availability on a free transfer was clearly the cause for Sevilla to move, but it seems Orta has been after the goalkeeper for a while, as he revealed he wanted him while he was in charge at Leeds United.
“We have followed him up. I was on the verge of signing him at Leeds. I was impressed by his great performance last season,” he said when asked about the goalkeeper.
