Either Coventry City or Ipswich Town have stepped up their interest in Fenerbahce striker Sidiki Chérif with an official offer.

Journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reports on the 19-year-old striker today and an official bid from an unnamed Premier League side now being on the table.

Unnamed club make bid

‘A Premier League club’ has made an official offer for Sidiki Chérif. There is no hint in his post about who that club may be.

However, the journalist does provide other hints. In a reply to the original post, a follower challenged the journalist to simply name the club. Sabuncuoğlu responded to this, stating that he had wrote about two Premier League teams previously.

That is in reference to a post at the beginning of August. Again, stating exclusive information, he reported that Ipswich Town and Coventry City both ‘keeping tabs’ on Chérif this summer. So, it is safe to assume that it would be one of those two clubs.

If we had to guess, Coventry would make more sense. They have Haji Wright, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms as their forward options at this moment in time.

Ipswich, on the other hand, have George Hirst, Emersonn, Chuba Akpom and Ali Al-Hamadi in their ranks. Emersonn cost €28m to sign from Toulouse, so it would be strange to then target another striker on top of that.

Of course, that is just guesswork from Sport Witness at this point. Given Sabuncuoğlu won’t go into further details – at this point anyway – that’s all that we can do.

The likelihood is that the bid for Chérif is from either of the promoted sides given his previous information.

The question is what kind of deal they’re offering. Sidiki Chérif cost Fenerbahce €18m to sign permanently this summer, so they’re sure to want that money back at least. They also paid a €4m loan fee in January, so that will need to be accounted for also.

Whether Ipswich Town, Coventry City, or anyone else is willing to pay that, remains to be seen.
