After months of being criticised by the Italian media, Gianluca Scamacca is finally finding his feet at Atalanta, a good seven months after leaving West Ham United.
The striker walked away from the Hammers after a terrible first season at the London Stadium, with the Serie A side paying €25.5m to bring him back to Italy.
This campaign also looked to be a write-off but after some comments from his manager, it appears the 25-year-old has now found some form, scoring three goals in his last three Europa League games, all coming against Sporting CP, as explained by Tutto Atalanta.
They say the former West Ham striker has gone ‘from an unknown to a certainty’ in the plans of Gian Piero Gasperini, and is starting to reveal his ‘true value just when the team needed him the most’.
Recalling that he initially faced a ‘tortuous path’, Scamacca’s ‘willpower’ as well as the support of the team have helped him through what are called ‘difficult times’.
The clashes against Sporting CP have helped him ‘reignite his season’, and he is now proving to be a ‘decisive player’, not only being a striker but also a ‘reference point for the team’, capable of linking up the play and scoring ‘crucial goals’.
Once seen as a cumbersome figure up front, his presence on the pitch is now ‘synonymous with danger for opponents’, which is what West Ham wanted for him, but never managed to get.
