Brentford are now dealing with renewed uncertainty over Gustavo Nunes’ future, as reports from Brazil point to a possible return to South America.
The 20-year-old winger has yet to secure a regular role in west London since arriving from Grêmio in August 2024.
According to Zona Mista and journalist Kaliel Dorneles, Grêmio have made a recent enquiry about the player’s situation.
The Brazilian club sold Nunes to Brentford for around €12m, keeping 20% of his economic rights in a future deal. That structure explains why Grêmio remain attentive to any movement.
Until recently, Nunes appeared determined to stay in England. Earlier this year, he turned down an approach that would have allowed him to leave and get minutes elsewhere, choosing instead to fight for space at Brentford.
However, the interest now coming from his boyhood club could carry a different weight and prompt a reassessment.
The same reports add that Brazilian sides Cruzeiro, Santos and Fluminense have also shown interest.
From Brentford’s side, however, the stance remains firm. The Premier League club do not favour a loan, largely because of the fee paid and the belief that the winger still carries resale potential.
Injuries have shaped much of Nunes’ time in England so far. He managed only brief Premier League cameos last season and spent long spells sidelined with back and muscle issues.
Although he recently returned with appearances for Brentford’s U21s, consistent first-team minutes have yet to follow.
Brentford now face a key decision. They can continue backing the long-term project or reassess their position if Brazilian interest becomes more concrete.
