On Sunday, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery publicly expressed desire to sign Villarreal’s Juan Foyth in the winter market.

Earlier today, we covered claims from Spain that the defender’s decision will be key for a potential transfer.

El Periódico Mediterráneo is a newspaper local to the La Liga side and reliable for news regarding Villarreal. They have also covered Aston Villa’s interest in the 27-year-old in today’s edition.

The Villans have been chasing a centre-back throughout this window and wanted Sevilla star Loïc Badé. That wasn’t to be, and they’re now working on signing the Argentina international.

Emery managed the former Tottenham Hotspur man at Villarreal and is now ‘going crazy’ for him. Aston Villa have contacted the Spanish club and made an offer for Foyth, whether former or informal isn’t made clear. The fee proposed also isn’t mentioned, but whatever it was isn’t enough.

The Premier League side signed Pau Torres from Villarreal in 2023. The report states the two clubs have a very good relationship and therefore Aston Villa first contacted Villarreal before approaching Foyth.

El Periódico Mediterráneo state the South American’s decision will be key in this operation.

He’s struggled with multiple injuries for most of last year and returned to the pitch in December, with four appearances so far this season. The report states the centre-back position is well covered at Villarreal.

Developments are expected in the next few hours or days.
