One of the talking points of the early parts of 2024, the decision of Manchester United’s André Onana to stay at the club to face Tottenham instead of heading off with Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations continues to make waves.
The goalkeeper wanted to ensure he played in the important game for his club, which ended in a 2-2 draw, before joining his teammates for the competition.
That’s what he did, and he ended up missing his national team’s opener, with the Manchester United star now expected to face Senegal in what could be a crucial encounter, which allowed El-Hadji Diouf to have a dig at the player in the process on Tout Pour La CAN on Canal+ Afrique, relayed by Foot Mercato.
Despite the former Premier League player being filmed calmly talking to Onana earlier on this week, Diouf this time took the opportunity to call out Cameroon ahead of his beloved Senegal.
He said: “Cameroon have gone backwards. These days, I’m in pain for the Cameroon fans and Cameroon people. They say they are the continent, but it’s more the continental hotel, because they are sitting back on their history.
“To see their goalkeeper arriving two days before a game. That would be unacceptable for Senegal.”
Therefore, he clearly isn’t impressed with what the Manchester United player did, and he’s making it known ahead of the match, perhaps with a little bit of mind games being played in the process.
